Google Forms and Flubaroo

I may be the only one that did not know this, but I figured it out last night. If you use Google forms for tests or quizzes, you can download Flubaroo to grade your quizes. I have been using Google forms for quizzes so that I could help save a tree and so that I would only have to grade one spreadsheet instead of many pieces of paper. Now with this plug-in and the click of a mouse, the quizzes are graded.

Computing in the "cloud" is a fascinating technology for anyone that has several computers, iPhones, iPads and/or iPods available for use. I shared both highlights of the year from my blog and webpage.

Today we talked about how we need to connect our classrooms to the cloud - we need a starting point. I gave several examples of how First Class could be used with either a webpage or a listing folder. We talked about saving files as PDF documents so all users could open them from any computer platform.

Notice the new feature on this post. Google Docs will now let you embed your presentations into a blog. What a great new feature!

Today, Heather discussed with the group how she uses Garage Band to record her tests for the students that need tests read to them. Then she drops the file into iTunes. From here she turns on file sharing in her iTunes on her personal computer. She chooses the test that she would like the students to have read. The students then can go to any Mac in the building, open iTunes and have the passages read to them. Thanks, Heather for sharing.

The other new concept was geocaching. We challenged the classes or clubs to set up a geocaching site. Geocaching is a treasure hunt where you use a GPS to hide and seek containers with other participants. Here is the website to get you going - http://www.geocaching.com/

There are a ton of resources for educators and students around the web, but it would be very time consuming wading through the offerings to find what suits you. So I've created a list of my picks for best educational resources. However, that doesn't mean there aren't others also qualified to be listed. I'd love to hear feedback on which sites you feel have educational value so that we can create an even better repository of websites!

Thinkfinity - One of the most popular educational resource sites on the web. Created by Verizon Foundation with 1000s of lesson plans, interactive tools, etc.
Teachers.net - A wonderful site with lesson plans created by teachers for teachers. A ton of classroom projects in all subjects and grade levels can be found here too.
Edhelper - A great collection of educational resources on all subject areas. This is a paid service for a low cost which can be purchased in teacher packs of five as well.
Shmoop - One of my favorite sites for education. A very fun and friendly site with a variety of resources such as links, lesson plans, guides, etc.
teAchnology - 1000s of lesson plans can be found here as well as other resources on holidays, events, etc.
Super Teacher Worksheets - A massive list of free printable worksheets for teachers on a number of subject areas.
Educational World - A great site with lesson plans and other materials for teachers.
TeachAde - A social network designed for educators with lots of free educational materials and a beautiful user interface.
Cybraryman - An excellent site with multiple links and resources for educators and students.
FREE - Free Resources for Educational Excellence. This site has it all -- lessons, videos, documents and more.

Create a slide show with Animoto

Once logged on the www.animoto.com, there are three simple steps to creating your video slide show.

Step 1: Select your pictures and/or video. You can upload images and videos of you own, select from the Animoto stock gallery, or import them from sites like Facebook, Smugmug, Flickr, Picasa, and Photobucket. Once selected, your photos and videos can be reordered simply by dragging and dropping them. Feeling more carefree? Select shuffle and have them randomly ordered by Animoto. On the same screen you can also add text to your pictures, duplicate them, rotate, delete and spotlight images. Spotlighting an image gives it more prominence in your finished slide show.

Step 2: Choose your slide show music. Think of what may be most appropriate for the online slideshows you are creating. Again, you can select music from your own collection, or choose from a variety of tunes in the Animoto library

Step 3: Finalize your video. Here you can choose what speed you want the video to play at - half, normal or double speed. You can also select what thumbnail you would like to have as your video cover screen. Finally, give your video a title and write a short description of what it is about. After you do this, Animoto will process and render your video. This may take a little time, depending on how long your slide show is. Once it is ready, Animoto will email you a link to your finished slide show. On this page you will also see a blue toolbox with links to email it, embed it in your classroom website, remix or export your video.

A free standard video can only be 30 seconds; however, with a educator package you can have unlimited time.

Teaching Activity: ABC Soup

List the ABC's on poster paper, a sheet of paper, or in a google doc. The students have to come up with a word or phrase that begins with each letter of the alphabet. The topic can be an introduction to see what they know about a subject, a review to see what they learned, or something as simple as things they are thankful for as the Thanksgiving season is here.

Today's topic was two teaching ideas using Google Docs and Google Presentations.
1. Stick Figure activity is where the student or a group of students tell what they see (know), hear or say, and the strengths of a topic on a stick figure of a person. This could be used as a google Doc with one group doing the "see", one group doing the "hear", and one group doing the "strengths or facts".
This also could be done with the Airliners or the new Averpens. A hard copy will also work. The stick figure was drawn with the drawing tools in Google docs.

2. Three Facts and a Fib is where there are four statements about a topic. Three of the statements are true and one is false. The students have to choose which is the Fib (false). This could be used as an introduction to a class, a closure activity, or review for a test.

Sharing Google Docs

You can still share your docs with as many or as few people as you like.There are three different visibility options: private; anyone with the link; and public on the web. You can see how your doc is set by looking at the icon right next to its title.

Private All documents start out as private. When you create a private doc, you are the only person with access to it. And from there, you can grant access to other people. Anyone trying to access the document will have to sign in to their Google Account to verify that they have access to the doc. It's also good if you want to collaborate with just a few people.

Anyone with the link A doc set to Anyone with the link is like an unlisted phone number. In the same way that anyone who knows an unlisted phone number can call it, anyone who knows the web address of a doc in this category can view it. Anyone with the link is a great setting if you want to give easy access to information to a bunch of people.

Public on the web Set a doc to public if you want to make it publicly available to anyone. Public docs may get indexed by search engines (like Google Web Search), can show up in search results, and anyone who finds the web address of the doc can access it. Public on the web is a great setting if you're trying to get the word out about something.

Click 'Share' to open Sharing settings

Change your doc's visibility option -- just click Change to the right of the visibility option.
See who has access to your doc -- their names are listed in the window, along with whether they can view or edit.
Add editors or viewers by name -- just click the white space below 'Add people' and type any email address.
Reset your doc's web address -- just click Reset link under the doc URL (Anyone with the link docs only).
Remove editors and viewers, or adjust how much access each person has.
Transfer ownership of your doc to someone else. Just choose 'Is owner' from the drop-down next to any person with access to the doc.

Share one of these documents with a colleague. Make changes and edit.

First - a Google account is required.

If you do not have a Google account you must set one up here.

There are different ways of getting started using Google documents:

you can create a new online document,
you can upload an existing one,
you can use a template from our templates gallery.

Creating and saving a document

To create a new document, on the right side click the Create new drop-down menu, and select Document.
As you're working on your document, click the Save button in the top right corner of the document, enter a name for the document in the window that appears, and click OK. Then, you'll see your document in your Docs list.

To save a local copy of a document, you can download it to your computer. To do this, open your document, click the File menu and point your mouse to the Download as option. You'll see these file types: HTML (zipped), RTF, Word, Open Office, PDF, and plain text. Select a file type and click OK in the browser window that appears.

Assignment:

Create a Google account if you do not have one.
In Google Docs, create a new document for your "to do" list and save it.

A New Search Engine - Wolframalpha

Wolfram|Alpha (http://www.wolframalpha.com/) is a relatively new addition to the expanding list of Internet search strategies. Its developers call it "a computational knowledge engine." It is designed to not just look up answers like other search tools, but to calculate answers based on questions asked it, using an ever-growing collection of data. Currently, it contains 10+ trillion pieces of data and 50,000+ types of algorithms and models.

Some Wolfram|Alpha Basics to Try:

Enter any date (like June 15, 1800). You'll get time from today, major holidays observed, historic events on that day, daylight information and the phase of the moon for that date.
Enter any city (like New York). You'll get population information, location and coordinates on a map, a local map, current local time and weather, economic indicators (such as cost of living index, median home price range, unemployment rate, and total sales tax rate), other indicators (such as violent crime rate, property crime rate, and average daily traffic delay), geographic properties, nearby cities and counties, and nicknames.
Enter any two stocks (like IBM Apple). You'll get the latest trades and tons more financial information and graphs.
Enter any calculation (like $250 + 15%). You'll get the answer and steps in how it was arrived at.

Enter any math formula. You'll get the formula graphed, solved, and with accompanying information.

Other Interesting Features:

Respond to Blogs

I just recently learned about the no-reply commenter. I was one and I didn't even know it. I am happy to report that I am no longer a "no-reply" commenter.
The reason?
If you have your account set up just right you can respond to comments on your blog in email form. It is very cool. If this appeals to you, then this is what you need to do.
Go to your dashboard.

Right beside your profile pic, click on edit profile.
Make sure the box that says "show email" is checked. Save.
Go to your blog Settings.
Click on the comments tab.
Scroll all the way down and enter your email addressin the email notification box. Save.
You have to do steps 4-6 for each blog that you have.
That's it.

Now you will receive an email each time someone leaves a comment on your blog. If that person has checked the "show email" box on their blog, you can click "reply" on the notification email and send an email directly to them. Other bloggers will now also be able to reply to your comments in email form. If a person has not done this, in the "from" line of the notification email it will say "no-reply commenter" and you will not be able to reply to those comments. Clear as mud?
I LOVE this! I always want to respond to comments on my blog, but am afraid that the person who left it will not come back to check. This way I can be sure that I haven't wasted my time and they will hear from me.

Save files as a PDF

Every program running in Mac OS X has the ability to create a PDF File from the print dialog window. Simply choose File - Print, but instead of clicking Print choose Save as PDF. Then select the desired location and file name for the converted PDF file.

How to get your students at the top of every page of your mastery without copy and pasting the row at the top of each page. This is for printing purposes and this is different than freezing the panes that we did in the inservice.

To Repeat Rows (names of students) for Mastery

View > Page Layout

File > Page Set Up

Sheet tab

Print Files > Rows to Repeat at Top Click on grid at end of box.

Highlight the row of your worksheet where the students' names are. You should see a formula appear in the box with $ signs.

Click OK. Now at the top of each page will be the students' names.

I must admit I have a bit of an aversion to drill-type activities, but I realize there are times that students need to practice and memorize certain concepts in order to succeed. Certainly we all know that studying makes for more successful learners. Abraham Lincoln clearly knew the value of studying when he said, “I will study and get ready, and perhaps my chance will come.” I doubt that Abraham could have imagined the neat Web 2.0 flashcard-type applications that our students can now use to help them with their studies.

I wish my daughter had access to StudyStack when she was studying for her Physician Assistant certification. When we moved her from college to her first job I think we must have moved literally thousands of index cards she had created as part of her studying strategy. If she were still in school she could now use StudyStack to create banks or stacks of electronic cards that she could review online, print, or export to her pda, cell phone, or iPod. Email registration is required in order to create a Study Stack, but students can use public study stacks if they do not have an email address or if you prefer to create the cards for them ahead of time. StudyStack offers several modes of studying: each stack can be viewed in flash card mode, in match mode, as a hangman game, crossword, word find, or bug match. Click on the export feature once you have created a study stack to learn the best way to export data to a hand held device.

A different repository of electronic flashcards can be found online at Flashcard DB. In fact, I found the selection of digital flash cards housed on this site to be far more extensive than those at StudyStack. Flashcard DB seemed almost boring compared to StudyStack since you can only review cards or print hard copies. On a happy note however, I found that it was pretty simple to export the cards from Flashcard DB into Study Stack which saved me tons of typing time (though do be prepared to do some light editing).

Another very large database of flashcards can be found at the Flashcard Exchange. Free email registration is required to make flashcards on this site, but no registration is required to use the cards that are already posted to the site. One feature I particularly liked about the site was the study results feature. You could assign a set of cards to students while they were in the lab or during recess and then ask them to show you the study results statistics so you could view how many cards they completed as well as a simple pie chart indicating the number of right/wrong answers. The selection of public cards on this site was fantastic, but there is a one-time lifetime fee required if you want to export the cards to portable devices or need to print them for hard copy review.

Quizlet is another excellent little application that will help students study vocabulary words. It was developed in 2005 by Andrew Sutherland, a 15-year old who wanted to find a better way to study his 111 French animal words. The rest is history and the popularity of his site is a testament to student ingenuity. The site is free to registered users and Facebook users. Data input is fast and easy and study options include a review activity, an input-the-answer activity, a quiz yourself feature, and two game-type features. The application also includes a print function and an export feature that imported fairly easily into StudyStack. Frankly, you may want to import some StudyStack cards into this application since the activities are quite different and compliment each other.

Finally, let’s finish this little Web 2.0 Flashcard review with The Flash Card Machine. Initially, I was not impressed with this application. It wasn’t quite as intuitive to navigate and the database of cards was smaller than databases found on many of the other flashcard sites I reviewed. Then, I realized you can add sound and graphics to your flashcards! Free email registration gives you the opportunity to create cards that could be used by art teachers, music teachers, and assistive technology teachers. This was the only product that I came across that allowed the flashcard developer nearly complete control over content! I would highly recommend this product if you work with young or struggling readers. As you create sets of cards you can elect to keep your cards private or make them public. In addition, there is an option that allows you to direct users to a given webpage. That means that you can create a direct link to your cards from a teacher webpage or a link in a PowerPoint, etc. and your students will not have to search for your cards or sign in to use the cards! Do not overlook this humble-looking little application…it has the potential to provide differentiated opportunities to all your students!

While I have included several of the Web 2.0 Flashcard sites that I particularly like, there are a number of Web 2.0 sites you can use to create study activities for your students. Keep in mind, students can also create their own electronic study cards. Students can even swap study cards with their peers as they share web addresses or export hard copy versions of their flash cards. And of course, you can always project these flashcards on your interactive whiteboard; voila, you have an interactive review lesson! Oh…and don’t forget to add the links to these digital index cards on your website so students can practice during recess on classroom computers, from their home computers, or in the computer lab. I’m sure Abe himself would be excited by the study and review opportunities all these flashcard sites offer!

How to Save a YouTube movie on a Mac

This explains how to save a YouTube movie for an iPod, PowerPoint or just to have on your computer.

1. Download iSquint http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/19769/isquint

2. Find your YouTube you wish to convert. Copy and Paste the URL into http://keepvid.com/

3. Download and convert to the flv format.

4. Now drag the flv file that you saved into the iSquint application and choose either the ipod or tv setting. Click on start and you have a mp4 file.

When I find a way to do it in fewer steps, I will replace this one. However, for now this works.

Clearing your Cache and Cookies

Most browsers hold a saved copy of visited webpages. Clearing your browser's cache and/or cookies can resolve a number of problems you may be experiencing while using Blogger or other sites on the web. Instructions for clearing your cache and cookies are different for each browser type.

To clear your cache and cookies, please follow the steps below.

For Safari:

Click Safari in the upper left corner of your display.
Select Reset Safari from the menu.
A pop-up box will appear. Click Reset.
Click Safari again.
Select Empty Cache from the menu.
A pop-up box will appear. Click Empty.

For MS Internet Explorer:

Click Tools at the top of your browser window.
Select Internet Options from the menu.
Select the General tab, if it's not already selected.
Locate the Browsing history section and click Delete.
In the Temporary Internet Files section, click Delete files If a pop-up window appears, click Yes.
In the Cookies section, click Delete cookies If a pop-up window appears, click Yes.

Text to Speech

To enable text-to-speech, go to System Preferences > Speech. On the Text to Speech tab, check the box next to "Speak selected text when the key is pressed," and in the next dialog box, press the key combination you want, such as Command-R. Choose a voice, and exit System Preferences. Alex is the most normal voice.

Highlight what you wish for the computer to read to you, then press the key combination you have chosen.

Enable Right click on Mouse

To right click on any Mac without changing any configuration:

Click “crtl+Mouse button”
A right click menu should pop up

To enable right click on an Apple desktop with an Apple mouse connected:

Go to “System Preferences”
Click “Keyboard & Mouse”
Click the “Mouse” tab
(Picture is above)
A picture of the mouse will show up. Click the drop down menu on the right hand side and select “Secondary Button"
Now whenever you click on the right hand side of the mouse, a right click menu will appear
